Twitter account location: see where an X account is based

X shows an "Account based in" line in a profile's About this account panel. Enter a username and this tool reads that same public value: the country or region, the connected-via source X lists next to it, and how many times the username has changed. It also tells you how much weight each value can carry.

What the check returns

  • Account based in. The country or region X displays for the account, for example United Kingdom. When X attaches an accuracy flag to the value, the result says whether X marks the location as accurate or not accurate.
  • Connected via. The source X lists for the account, for example United States App Store. It can name a different country from the line above.
  • Username changes. The number of times X says the account has changed its @username. The earlier usernames are not listed.
  • When there is nothing to return. If X shows no location for an account, the result says so. If the username does not resolve to an account, you get "No account found". The tool does not guess a country.

You can type a username such as jack, @jack, or paste a profile link. You get 20 free checks a day without signing in and more with a free Google sign-in. A result for the same account is reused for up to 15 minutes.

Where this location comes from

X added an About this account panel to profiles. It lists a few facts X holds about the account, including when it joined, where it is based and how often its username has changed. The tool reads that panel's data for the username you enter and shows it without changing it.

This is different from the location printed under a bio. That field is free text the owner types, and it can say anything. If you want to check a Twitter account location and ask where the account is based, the X account location that answers it is the first row of the table below, not the bio field.

ValueSet byWhere on XWhat to know
Account based inXAbout this account panelA country or region. The account owner does not type it. This is what the tool reads.
Bio locationThe account ownerUnder the bio on the profileFree text. Anyone can write any place, a joke or nothing. The tool does not use it.
Connected viaXAbout this account panelA source such as an app store region. It describes how the account connects, not a place.

Limits you should know before trusting it

  • It is X's label, not a measurement by us. We show what X displays. We do not know how X works the value out, and we do not add any data of our own.
  • It can be wrong. The value may not match where the person is, for example when they travel or use a VPN. Treat it as one signal among others.
  • It can be missing. Some accounts have no "Account based in" line. A missing value is not evidence of anything.
  • It is coarse. A country or a region is the most precise thing it says. There is no city, address, coordinate or IP address in the result.
  • It is a reading at one moment. X can change what it displays. Check again later if the answer matters.

Privacy and fair use

Everything shown here is public information X displays on the profile. The tool does not reveal anything X keeps private, and it is not a way to find or follow an individual. Reasonable uses are modest ones: getting context on an account you are reading, or seeing whether an account that claims to be from one place is labelled by X as based somewhere else.

If this is about your own account, how the line appears on your profile is decided by X and your X settings. We do not describe those settings here because we cannot keep that description accurate; see X's help center for the current options.

Checking a list of accounts?

The tool is for one account at a time. For a list of handles, the same data comes from one API call per account: /twitter/user_about?userName=. The response has the account under data, with id, userName, createdAt and an about_profile object that carries the About this account values. Each call costs 30 credits, which is $0.0003 at the list rate of $1 for 100,000 credits (see pricing).

import requests

HEADERS = {"X-API-Key": "YOUR_API_KEY"}

for handle in handles:
    body = requests.get(URL, headers=HEADERS,
                        params={"userName": handle}, timeout=20).json()
    data = body.get("data") or {}
    if body.get("status") != "success" or not data:
        print(handle, "-> no data:", body.get("msg"))
        continue
    # about_profile is the object behind X's "About this account" panel.
    # Print it whole and read the keys you need from your own output.
    print(data.get("userName"), data.get("id"), data.get("createdAt"))
    print(data.get("about_profile"))

Questions

How to check Twitter account location?

There are two ways. On X, open the profile's About this account panel and read the "Account based in" line. Or type the username in the tool above: it reads the same public value and shows it with the connected-via source and the number of username changes.

How do I locate a Twitter account?

You can see the country or region X publishes for the account, and nothing finer than that. This tool does not return a city, an address, coordinates or an IP address. If X shows no "Account based in" line for an account, the tool reports that it is missing.

Can someone find your location from Twitter?

From this panel, people can see the country or region X displays for your account. They cannot see your precise position from it. Other things you choose to publish, such as the location in your bio or places you mention in posts, are separate and under your control.

Can a Twitter account be traced?

Not with this tool. It shows the country or region X itself displays in About this account. It is not GPS, it is not an IP lookup, and it does not identify or trace a person. It says nothing more precise than what X displays.

Is the "Account based in" location always right?

No. It is what X displays, and it can be wrong. A value may not match where the person is, for example when they travel or use a VPN. When X attaches its own accuracy flag to the value, the result shows it. We do not know how X works the value out.

Is the check free? What do you store?

Yes, 20 checks a day per visitor without signing in, more with a free Google sign-in. We log each check (time, the username checked, result) to prevent abuse; we don't sell or publish them. Results for the same account are reused for up to 15 minutes.
