Sprout Social Alternatives: What to Use Instead, by Job, With a Twitter (X) Data Study

By TwitterAPI.io Team•14 min read
Decision map of Sprout Social alternatives in four columns. Publishing and scheduling: Buffer at $5/month per channel, Metricool from $20/month, Later. All-in-one suites: Hootsuite $99 to $399 per user, Agorapulse $79 to $149 per user, SocialPilot and Sendible with flat team plans. Enterprise listening: Brandwatch and Meltwater quote only, Sprout Listening add-on by demo, Hootsuite advanced listening on Enterprise. X-only monitoring you build: /twitter/tweet/advanced_search at $0.15 per 1,000 posts returned versus X pay-per-usage at $5 per 1,000 reads.
Sprout Social alternatives grouped by the job they replace. Seat prices from each vendor's own pricing page; study numbers collected in 2026.
TL;DR
  • Sprout Social lists Standard $199, Professional $299, Advanced $399 per seat/month (annual), Essentials $79; Listening is a separate add-on with no listed price.
  • Same-shape suites: Hootsuite ($99 to $399 per user/month, annual) and Agorapulse ($79 to $149 per user/month, annual) cover publishing, inbox and reports.
  • Publishing only: Buffer ($5/month per channel, billed yearly), Metricool (from $20/month, X needs an add-on), SocialPilot (from $25.50/month, annual).
  • Study: a raw brand-name search on X is noisy. 93% of Hootsuite matches only hit inside a link; Sprout Social got 1.9 real mentions a day.
  • X-only listening bill: every match for all 8 brands, about 8,337 posts a month, is $1.25 at $0.15 per 1,000 vs $41.69 on X pay-per-usage.
  • Rule of thumb: keep a suite when non-developers publish and reply across several networks; build on /twitter/tweet/advanced_search when the job is X data for a developer-owned pipeline.

People look for Sprout Social alternatives for one of three reasons: the per-seat price grows with every teammate, the features they use are a small slice of the bundle, or the one job they care about (usually listening) is an add-on with a demo instead of a price. Each reason points to a different replacement, so this page groups alternatives by the job they replace, not by a ranked list.

We read every vendor's pricing page this session and quote only what rendered, with the billing period the vendor shows. Then we measured the network we work with daily, X (Twitter): how much conversation eight social media tool brands actually get on X, how noisy a raw brand search is, and what it costs to capture all of it. If you want Sprout's own API and what it can and cannot return, our separate page on the Sprout Social API covers that; this page is about replacing the tool.

Monthly cost to capture every X match for 8 social media tool brands

$1.25 at $0.15 per 1,000 posts returned vs $41.69 at X pay-per-usage, for about 8,337 matching posts a month (1,160 posts measured, collected in 2026). 38% of raw matches only hit inside a link.

What Sprout Social costs today, and what is extra

Sprout Social sells per seat. Its pricing page (sproutsocial.com/pricing) shows a 30-day free trial with no credit card and these plans, which we copied this session:

Sprout Social planAnnual billingBilled monthlyProfilesNotable inclusions
Essentials (new)$79 per seat/month$99 per seat/monthup to 5publishing, optimal send times, post reports
Standard$199 per seat/month$249 per seat/month5inbox, keyword and location monitoring, review management
Professional$299 per seat/month$399 per seat/monthunlimitedcompetitor, tag and paid insights
Advanced$399 per seat/month$499 per seat/monthunlimitedsentiment, the Sprout API, Message Spike Alerts
EnterprisecustomcustomunlimitedSSO, white-glove onboarding

What is extra. Premium Analytics and Listening are each sold as individual add-ons to Standard and up, with no price on the page (the button is "Schedule a demo"). Employee Advocacy and Professional Services are also add-ons. Trellis Plus, the larger AI credit pack, is $28 per seat/month ($35 billed monthly).

What that means in practice. A three-person team on Professional pays $897/month on annual billing before any add-on. If what that team really needs is a publishing calendar, or a stream of X posts about the brand, most of that spend buys features it does not use. That is the gap every alternative below targets from a different side.

Prices below are from each vendor's own pricing page, fetched this session, on the billing period the vendor shows. Where a price did not render in our fetch, we say so instead of guessing.

One pattern is worth noticing. Several tools now treat X as an extra: Metricool's free plan covers "all your brands' social networks (except LinkedIn and Twitter)" and its paid plans say "Twitter/X add-on required"; Agorapulse lists X Lite and X Plus as separate add-ons with no price. If X is your main network, check that line before you compare seat prices, because the headline price may not include it.

Like-for-like suites: Hootsuite and Agorapulse

Hootsuite is the closest match in shape: Standard, Professional, Advanced and Enterprise, sold per user. The pricing page states paid plans start at $99 for Standard, $199 for Professional and range up to $399 for Advanced, per user/month on annual billing, with a 14-day trial (trial accounts have daily posting limits). At the same plan name, Hootsuite lists $100 less per user than Sprout on Standard and Professional. Its FAQ puts advanced listening, 13 months of historical data and alerts on the Enterprise plan.

Agorapulse lists Standard at $79, Professional at $119 and Advanced at $149 per user/month on annual billing ($99, $149 and $199 monthly), a 30-day trial without a card, with extra social profiles beyond a plan's limit at $10 to $15/month each. Competitor benchmarking and ROI reports sit on Advanced. X publishing and management are separate add-ons (X Lite, X Plus) priced by contact.

When a suite is still the answer. If marketers and support staff, not developers, publish and reply across Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok and X every day, a suite's calendar, approvals and shared inbox are the product, and the per-seat price buys real work. The savings come from matching the plan to the seats that need it, not from dropping the category.

Publishing-first alternatives: Buffer, SocialPilot, Metricool, Later

If your team uses Sprout mostly as a calendar, the per-seat model is the expensive part. Publishing-first tools price by channel or by plan instead.

Buffer has a Free plan for up to 3 channels, Essentials at $5/month per channel and Team at $10/month per channel, both quoted billed yearly ($60 and $120 a year per channel), with unlimited team members on Team. It also lists API access with request quotas per channel on every plan.

SocialPilot sells by plan, not seat: Essentials $25.50/month billed annually ($30 monthly) for 7 accounts and 1 user, Standard $42.50 ($50 monthly) for 15 accounts and 3 users, Premium $85 ($100 monthly) for 25 accounts and 6 users.

Metricool has a free plan for one brand, Starter from $20/month and Advanced from $53/month on annual USD billing ($25 and $67 monthly), scaling with the number of brands. X needs its add-on, and its footnote mentions a 30-day metric storage limit for Twitter/X.

Later focuses on visual planning for Instagram and TikTok; its plan prices did not render in our fetch, so check the vendor page directly.

None of these replace Sprout's listening. They replace the calendar, and in most cases the reporting on your own profiles.

Study: how much X conversation do social media tools actually get?

Listening is usually the most expensive Sprout line, so we measured what a listening job looks like on X for eight brands in this exact category. For each brand we ran an X search for its name or handle (its own posts excluded) and kept the latest 100 matches, then checked whether each post really talks about the brand: the name in the text or the handle tagged. In total we read 1,160 posts in 68 API requests, collected in 2026.

Brand (X handle)FollowersAll matches per dayReal mentions per dayLink-only matches
Hootsuite (@hootsuite)6,138,674217.815.293%
Metricool (@metricool)5,59522.617.224%
Sendible (@Sendible)13,55321.71.195%
Buffer (@buffer)913,6449.69.60%
SocialPilot (@SocialPilot_Co)72,3533.5172%
Sprout Social (@SproutSocial)115,8892.31.914%
Agorapulse (@agorapulse)12,9590.30.34%
Later (@latermedia)37,6590.10.10%

A raw brand search is noisy. 93% of Hootsuite matches and 95% of Sendible matches never named the brand in the text: the search matched inside a link, typically a post published through that tool. Hootsuite's 217.8 matches a day shrink to 15.2 real mentions. Across all eight brands, 38% of matches were link-only. Any listening tool has to filter this, and with your own pipeline you choose the rule.

The volumes are small. Sprout Social itself got 2.3 matches and 1.9 real mentions a day on X; Metricool 17.2; Agorapulse 0.3. For a mid-size B2B brand, X listening is often a few dozen posts a week, which is a very different workload from the millions of conversations a listening add-on is sized and priced for.

What the X posts about Sprout Social and its price say. We also searched X for "sprout social" together with alternative, price, cost, expensive or switch. The latest 80 matches spanned about 178.1 days, so this is a slow, steady conversation of roughly 0.4 posts a day, not a spike.

Topic in the post (one post can hit several)Share of posts
alternative / switch53.8%
price / cost / expensive33.8%
names another tool57.5%
replies (rest are original posts)2.5%

Reading the numbers. 57.5% of these posts name another tool alongside Sprout Social, which is what comparison shopping looks like on X: people weigh Sprout against Hootsuite, Buffer or a newer scheduler in the same post. 33.8% mention price or cost words. We report topic shares only; we did not profile or quote any individual author.

Horizontal bar chart on a log scale comparing all X search matches per day with posts that actually talk about the brand, for eight social media tools. Hootsuite: 217.8 matches but 15.2 real mentions, 93% link-only. Metricool 22.6 vs 17.2. Sendible 21.7 vs 1.1, 95% link-only. Buffer 9.6 vs 9.6. SocialPilot 3.5 vs 1, 72% link-only. Sprout Social 2.3 vs 1.9. Agorapulse 0.3 vs 0.3. Later 0.1 vs 0.1.

The X-only path: replace the listening add-on with an API

If the job you bought Sprout Listening for is "tell us when people talk about us or our competitors on X", the replacement is a search query and a small script. TwitterAPI.io's /twitter/tweet/advanced_search takes the same operators as X search (from:, -from:, OR, quoted phrases, since_time:) and returns posts with text, author, engagement counts and entities. It needs no X account. You pay only for the data returned: $0.15 per 1,000 posts, 15 credits per post, with a 15-credit minimum when a search comes back empty.

BrandMatching posts a month (est.)twitterapi.io at $0.15 per 1,000X pay-per-usage at $0.005 per read
Hootsuite6,534$0.98$32.67
Metricool678$0.10$3.39
Sendible651$0.10$3.25
Buffer288$0.04$1.44
SocialPilot105$0.02$0.53
Sprout Social69$0.01$0.35
Agorapulse9under $0.01$0.04
Later3under $0.01$0.01
All 8 together8,337$1.25$41.69

What that table says. Capturing every match for all eight brands, link-only noise included, is about 8,337 posts a month: $1.25 at $0.15 per 1,000 on twitterapi.io, $41.69 on X's pay-per-usage rate card at $0.005 per post read (about 33x more per 1,000 posts, $5 vs $0.15). Either number is small next to a single Sprout seat at $199/month.

The polling floor is the real cost at low volume. A check that finds nothing still costs $0.00015, so checking one query every 5 minutes for a month is $1.30 and every 60 seconds is $6.48, before any posts are returned. For a brand with two mentions a day, poll every 5 to 15 minutes, or register a filter rule (/oapi/tweet_filter/add_rule) and let matching posts be pushed to a webhook you host.

To filter the link-only matches the study found, keep only posts that name the brand in the text or tag the handle:

python
import os, re, requests

BASE = "https://api.twitterapi.io"
HEADERS = {"X-API-Key": os.environ["TWITTERAPI_IO_API_KEY"]}
QUERY = '(@SproutSocial OR "sprout social") -from:SproutSocial'
BRAND = re.compile(r"sprout ?social", re.I)

def talks_about_brand(t):
    """Keep posts that name the brand in the text or tag the handle, drop link-only matches."""
    if BRAND.search(t.get("text", "")):
        return True
    mentions = (t.get("entities") or {}).get("user_mentions") or []
    return any(m.get("screen_name", "").lower() == "sproutsocial" for m in mentions)

r = requests.get(f"{BASE}/twitter/tweet/advanced_search",
                 params={"query": QUERY, "queryType": "Latest"}, headers=HEADERS, timeout=30)
r.raise_for_status()
page = r.json()
real = [t for t in page.get("tweets", []) if talks_about_brand(t)]
print(len(page.get("tweets", [])), "matches,", len(real), "talk about the brand")
Grouped bar chart of the monthly cost to capture every X search match per brand at two rates. Hootsuite 6,534 posts a month: $32.67 on X pay-per-usage vs $0.98 on twitterapi.io. Metricool $3.39 vs $0.10. Sendible $3.25 vs $0.10. Buffer $1.44 vs $0.04. SocialPilot $0.53 vs $0.02. Sprout Social $0.35 vs $0.01. All 8 brands: 8,337 posts a month, $41.69 vs $1.25.

What the official accounts tell you about X in this category

We also pulled the most recent original posts (replies excluded) from each brand's own X account. The cadence is a signal of how much these vendors invest in X themselves:

Official accountFollowersPosts in sampleDays the sample spansPosts per day
@buffer913,6444061.30.65
@SocialPilot_Co72,35340640.63

@hootsuite6,138,67420279.10.07
@latermedia37,65920364.70.05

Most of these accounts post on X rarely. @SproutSocial's last 40 original posts spanned about 321.1 days; @hootsuite, the account with 6,138,674 followers, returned 20 original posts spread over 279.1 days. Buffer and SocialPilot post most often, at well under one post a day. That fits the pricing pages: X increasingly appears as an add-on or a listed extra, not the center of the product.

Why it matters for your choice. If X is one network among six for you, any suite above will do. If X is the network your customers, investors or developers actually use, check how each tool supports it, and consider whether the X part should be an API you own, feeding your own dashboard, Slack or data warehouse.

How to choose: a short decision guide

Keep Sprout Social if you use the shared inbox, approvals and cross-network reports daily, several non-developers need seats, and Listening or Premium Analytics is already in your contract.

Move to Hootsuite or Agorapulse if you want the same suite shape at a lower listed per-user price; check whether X is included or an add-on on the plan you pick.

Move to Buffer, SocialPilot or Metricool if you mostly schedule posts; pricing per channel or per plan usually beats per seat for small teams.

Buy Brandwatch or Meltwater if you need multi-network listening with years of history and an analyst team runs it.

Build on an X data API if the job is X monitoring for a brand and its competitors and a developer owns the pipeline. Our measured bill for eight brands was $1.25 a month at $0.15 per 1,000 posts returned. New accounts that pass the automatic bot check get up to $1 of free credits (at most 100,000 credits, no card, one per person or network, expiring after 31 days); purchased credits never expire, and the rate limit is 0.2 requests/s before the first payment and 20 once paid.

How we collected this

Question. For Sprout Social and seven tools commonly named as alternatives (Hootsuite, Buffer, Agorapulse, SocialPilot, Metricool, Later, Sendible): how many X posts mention each brand per day, how many of those really talk about it, what capturing them costs per month at two published rates, and how often each official account posts.

Accounts and queries. Official accounts: @SproutSocial, @hootsuite, @buffer, @agorapulse, @SocialPilot_Co, @metricool, @latermedia, @Sendible (profile via /twitter/user/info, up to 40 recent original posts via /twitter/user/last_tweets). Mentions: /twitter/tweet/advanced_search with queryType=Latest, the brand name or handle, and -from: the brand's own account, latest 100 matches per brand. Buffer and Later were searched by handle only, because their names are common words. Price talk: "sprout social" plus alternative, alternatives, expensive, pricing, price, cost or switch, latest 80 matches.

Window and sample. The most recent posts at collection time, collected in 2026: 800 mention posts, 280 official posts, 80 price-talk posts and 8 profiles, 1,160 posts in total, in 68 requests costing $0.18. Each brand's window runs from its oldest to its newest match, from 11 hours for Hootsuite to years for Later; the per-day rate is posts divided by hours spanned, times 24, and the monthly estimate is that rate times 30.

What the sample cannot show. A 100-post window is a snapshot; launches and outages spike volume. The link-only rule is a text test, so a post that discusses a brand without naming it is missed, and a post that names it in passing is counted. Search coverage of X is not a census. Monthly costs exclude polling-floor charges for empty checks, which depend on how often you poll.

Privacy. Aggregates only. Organization accounts are named; no individual author is named, quoted or profiled. Mention and keyword search pages were analyzed in temporary storage and not kept; the published sample holds de-identified rows (brand, timing, reply, link, media, language, likes, views).

10 — Questions

Questions readers ask

What is the closest alternative to Sprout Social?

By product shape, Hootsuite and Agorapulse: both are per-user suites with publishing, a shared inbox and reporting. Hootsuite lists $99, $199 and $399 per user/month on annual billing for Standard, Professional and Advanced; Agorapulse lists $79, $119 and $149 per user/month on annual billing. Check whether X (Twitter) is included on the plan you choose; Agorapulse sells it as an add-on.

How much does Sprout Social cost per month?

Sprout's pricing page lists Essentials at $79, Standard at $199, Professional at $299 and Advanced at $399 per seat/month on annual billing, or $99, $249, $399 and $499 billed monthly. Enterprise is custom. Listening and Premium Analytics are add-ons without a listed price.

Is there a free alternative to Sprout Social?

For publishing, yes: Buffer has a Free plan for up to 3 channels and Metricool has a free plan for one brand (it excludes LinkedIn and Twitter). There is no free equivalent of Sprout's listening and inbox suite. For X data, new twitterapi.io accounts that pass the automatic bot check get up to $1 of free credits (at most 100,000 credits, no card, one per person or network, expiring after 31 days).

Which Sprout Social alternative is good for social listening?

For multi-network listening with history, Brandwatch and Meltwater are the usual enterprise choices and quote on request; Hootsuite puts advanced listening on Enterprise. If you only need X, a search query on an X data API covers it: our measurement of eight brands came to about 8,337 matching posts a month, or $1.25 at $0.15 per 1,000 posts returned.

Why does a brand-name search on X return so many irrelevant posts?

Because search also matches inside links. In our study 93% of Hootsuite matches and 95% of Sendible matches never named the brand in the text. Filter by checking the post text and the tagged handles (entities.user_mentions) before you count or alert.

Can I get X (Twitter) data from Sprout Social's API instead?

Sprout's API is listed on the Advanced plan and reads data for the profiles connected to your own account. It is not a general X search API, so you cannot pull arbitrary posts about competitors through it. Our page on the Sprout Social API covers its endpoints and limits.

How does the X data cost compare with the official X API?

X's pay-per-usage rate card lists $0.005 per post read, which is $5 per 1,000 posts, capped at 3 million post reads a month before Enterprise. TwitterAPI.io charges $0.15 per 1,000 posts returned, about 33x less per 1,000. For the eight brands we measured, that is $41.69 vs $1.25 a month.
